The Center on Human Development and Disability (CHDD) at the University of Washington makes important contributions to the lives of people with developmental disabilities and their families, through a comprehensive array of research, clinical services, training, community outreach, and dissemination activities. AUCD formerly UAP(University Affiliated Programs) are authorized by federal legislation to help States and local communities respond to the needs of people with developmental disabilities and their families.(AUCDs) serve as a liaison between the academic world and the developmental disabilities service delivery system. AUCDs network with and provide assistance to State Agencies, their local affiliates, and to various nongovermental consumer-based organizations. Most AUCDs provide direct clinical, educational, and other services to individuals and families, or can assist families in finding services.

Dr. Harrell, FRIPH is a researcher in the field of sleep medicine and autism. His doctoral degree is in molecular biology; he is not a medical doctor. Harrell serves as Innovation Research Director and as such is investigating new technologies 5 to 10 years down the road. Additionally, Harrell is pursuing a second doctorate, this time in the field of public health-epidemiology. Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) and autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) are both growing public health concerns. Harrell is researching sleep problems in children with ASD. Of specific interest are: (1) sleep fragmentation in children with ASD as well as other members of the household; (2) public health and epidemiology of sleep disorders (SD) and sleep problems (SP), especially in those with ASD; (3) molecular activity of SDs and SPs in ASD; (4) social and behavioral dimensions of SDs and SPs in ASD and other members of the household; (5) autonomic activity relating to SDs and SPs.

HANDLE® incorporates research and techniques from many disciplines. It includes principles and perspectives from medicine, rehabilitation, psychology, education and nutrition. It is founded on an interactive, developmental model of human functioning. The HANDLE Institute International, LLC offers clinical services, community information, and professional training programs. The Institute works with people of all ages who have learning disabilities (dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, etc.), attention deficit/hyperactivity disorders, autism and pervasive developmental disorders, visual/perceptual/motor dysfunctions, behavior disorders, apraxia and dyspraxia, memory and organizational disorders, aphasia and other language disorders, and Tourette’s Syndrome. The main facility is located in Seattle, Washington. HANDLE satellite clinics serve various neurodevelopmental needs and different geographical regions. There are currently Practitioners and Screeners across the United States, in Europe and South Africa.
