Bittersweet Inc. is a care and treatment facility for adolescents and adults with autism. We have five main directorates at Bittersweet: Residential; Vocational; Supported Living and Respite; Advocacy and Supported Employment. Our residential program serves 20 persons in three Medicaid Licensed homes on our main campus. The habilitation program at these facilities happens in the morning and in the evening after completing their work. The residential schedules are full of exercise, academic programs and community outings. Habilitation goals of daily living and skills of adaptive living such as laundry, personal hygiene, meal preparation, and structured social interaction play a large part in the success of our residential program. Our facility has five supported living homes. The participants come to our main campus for day programming and then go back to homes in the community that they share with other participants. Habilitation and skills development continue through all residential programs just as though they were living in our main campus housing. Bittersweet advocates and helps schools through consulting and planning, working with the local courts to advocate on the rights of individuals with autism. We also consult to groups or families to give them assistance on how to best serve persons with autism. We conduct tours to professionals and students to expose them to our model and perhaps to their first experience to someone with autism. Bittersweet offers Respite Services to families

The Board of MR/DD provides services and supports to more than 8,000 boys and girls and men and women in Cuyahoga County. The community knows us best for our early childhood centers, schools, adult activities centers and group homes, but we're much more than that. Our full range of services includes everything from in-home early intervention programs for very young children and their families to leisure programs for seniors. Much of what we do goes beyond the walls of our own centers and homes and takes place in the community, where we encourage individuals with mental retardation and other developmental disabilities to live, learn, work and play.

I have worked with children on the autism spectrum for more than 25 years, using an arts-based program I developed to help balance a child's three fold nature of body, mind and soul. This program includes music, art, drawing, sculpture, puppetry, and movement in addition to nutritional guidance. Since this program has been shown to be effective, fun and easy to implement, I have written a book called Creative Therapy for Children With Autism, ADD and Asperger's, published by SquareOne Publishers in 2008. The purpose of this guide is two-fold: 1) to provide parents, therapists, physicians, teachers and care givers with a manual that helps to identify spectrum disorders by the most common characteristics and 2) to encourage parents to play a major part in the improvement of their child by participating in his or her activity. Part Two of the book describes all of the techniques I have used with children since 1981 plus games, exercises and activities that have proven the test of time. Please check out our web sites - especially the most recent one about Remedial Therapy and the arts.
