Controlled studies document that with early, comprehensive intervention, a sizable minority of children diagnosed with autism have been able to achieve normal educational and intellectual functioning by 7 years of age (Lovaas, 1987; McEachin, Smith, & Lovaas, 1993).

I am a private educational consultant specializing in the field of autism. I have been in the field of education for 20 years, and in private practice for 8 years. The Developmental Evaluation Center does initial evaluations that certify children for this service. After the developmental evaluations are completed, the DEC and the parents carefully review and discuss the results. Particular attention is given to the child's relative strengths and needs in all areas of growth and development. Results and parents' concerns are considered by local Interagency Infant/Toddler Consortiums and eligibility for ECIS is determined.
