The practice of Mayerson & Associates is concentrated almost exclusively in the representation of children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders in educational rights matters and related litigation. We also advocate before Congress and at the state level to support worthwhile legislative initiatives and oppose initiatives that would erode existing statutory protections.
Most of our matters originate in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania. To date, however, we have represented families in approximately 26 states, as far away as Alaska. We also consult internationally.
We are very proud of our track record in winning “due process†cases. We are equally proud of our track record in achieving satisfactory settlements. Litigation is expensive and time consuming and families understandably are sensitive about confronting their child’s school district. We view litigation as a last resort and will make every reasonable effort to enter into an appropriate compromise with the local educational agency and its counsel.
We scrutinize assessments and the child’s Individualized Educational Plan (“IEPâ€) from a substantive and “procedural safeguard†basis. In the context of this analysis, we carefully measure the IEP against the requirements of law and statute.
We appreciate the fact that every child will present differently with a unique mix of strengths and challenges. Just as no two children are alike, each case is different. Our central mission is to secure appropriate educational services and intervention programs that are meaningfully tailored to the child’s unique and individual needs and which will serve to promote the child’s “least restrictive environment.â€
