PAL's Play Ball Adaptive Baseball League
2009 Season

MISSION: To provide children with special needs the ability to participate in the all-American sport of baseball. Participants gather from Norwin and surrounding areas of Mt. Pleasant, Belle Vernon, Murrysville, West Newton and further. The Buddy System, which includes parents, siblings, various organizations and student volunteers, assist the players with batting, fielding, walking, running or wheeling the participants around the bases. This volunteer system further provides outreach to the needs of our special kids in the community.

ESTABLISHED: 2005 with 48 participants. Season 2006 had 54 participants, season 2007 had 67, and season 2008 had 72 participants. The continued increase clearly shows the necessity for such programs for our children of special needs.

FOUNDED BY: Johnna Sleith, mother of a child with special needs, established the league in 2005. Due to the obvious need in the area and with the cooperation of the PAL Board of Directors, the league has rapidly grown and the children, their families and the community are enriched from the program.

SPECIAL NEEDS: The needs of our special kids include autism, cerebral palsy, down syndrome and other syndromes too numerous to mention. Most children do need assistance from their buddies or their parents. When you are seated on the cheering sidelines, particular needs of the child are secondary to the smiles on their face.

SPONSORS: The sponsors include a variety of businesses that are located in Norwin and surrounding areas. In the 2008 season, we were proud to have 42 generous sponsors participate in funding our league.

GUEST PITCHERS: Our league also has weekly “guest pitchers” at each game. Our pitchers are “famous” people (TV personalities, sports heroes, fireman, police officers, politicians, teachers, principals, etc…) from the community showing support for our special players. The players greatly benefit by having well known community figures helping, supporting and encouraging them at their games.

SEASON: The season usually begins in early May and ends with an Awards Celebration Picnic in June.
